What is OCG removal and why does it rasterize?

OCG (Optional Content Group) watermarks live on a separate layer. The tool renders the page with that layer hidden, which means the output is a rasterized image. You can choose the DPI quality.

Can I preview the result before applying?

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

What if no watermarks are detected?

How Watermark Removal Works

OxygenPDF scans your PDF for watermark-like elements: annotations marked as watermarks, Optional Content Group (OCG) layers used for overlays, and transparency-based XObject watermarks. The tool classifies each detection by type and confidence level, then removes the ones it can.

For annotation-based watermarks, removal is lossless — the tool strips the annotation objects from the PDF structure without touching the page content. For OCG layer watermarks, the tool rasterizes pages with the watermark layer hidden, producing a clean output.

Detection and Removal Strategies

The tool auto-detects watermarks and classifies them by type: annotation, OCG layer, or XObject. Each detection gets a confidence rating. You can choose between auto (lets the tool decide), annotation-only, OCG-only, or combined removal strategies.

For OCG removal, which involves rasterization, you can set the output quality: low (72 DPI), medium (144 DPI), or high (216 DPI). Annotation removal is always lossless. A side-by-side preview shows the before and after so you can verify the result before applying.
