A Grid That Actually Closes

Most graph paper generators draw evenly spaced lines from one corner and stop when they run out of page. The result is exactly what you’d expect: full squares near the top left, and a ragged half-cut row or column wherever the spacing doesn’t divide the page evenly. Print it, and the last squares along the bottom or right edge are stubs, not squares.

This generator works out how many whole cells fit before it draws a single line, then splits the small leftover gap evenly across opposite edges. Every square on the page is a complete square. Pick any page size, any orientation, any page count, and the grid still closes on all four sides.

Five Rulings, Because One Size Doesn’t Fit a Classroom and a Lab Notebook

Grid paper isn’t one product. A kid plotting coordinates needs different squares than an engineer sketching a circuit, and a metric classroom needs neither of the imperial sizes.

1/8 Inch and 1/4 Inch

The two US classroom sizes. 1/4 inch is the default most people mean by “graph paper”; 1/8 inch packs in enough resolution for detailed diagrams and small multiples.

1/5 Inch, Engineering Ruling

Five squares to the inch, the ruling that shows up in lab notebooks and engineering pads, sized to leave calculation work room without crowding the next line.

How It Compares

What 1/8 Inch Actually Looks Like Next to 1 cm

1/8 inch (3.175 mm) is the tightest of the five, small enough that the squares read as a fine mesh rather than individual boxes at normal reading distance. 5 mm and 1/5 inch (5.08 mm) sit close enough to pass for each other at a glance, which is exactly why the metric and engineering versions are two separate presets instead of one “medium” option trying to serve both.

1 cm is the odd one out: roughly one and a half times the width of 1/4 inch, built for work where you want the grid visible but not fighting with whatever you’ve drawn on top of it.

Not a Standard, a Convention Everyone Uses Anyway

There’s no ANSI or ISO document that defines graph paper. Look for one and you won’t find it. What exists instead is a set of sizes that classroom-supply and lab-notebook manufacturers converged on independently: Wikipedia’s own graph paper entry, the 1/8-inch worksheets sold by publishers like Do2Learn, and the 1 cm sheets MathBits and hand2mind print for centimeter-grid math lessons all land on the same five numbers without citing each other.

That convergence is the honest basis for these five presets. They’re not official specifications. They’re just what graph paper has always meant, confirmed in enough independent places that guessing at your own spacing would be the riskier move.
