Is this the same as 'convert text to outlines'?

Functionally yes — the output no longer depends on any font, which is what outlining is for. Technically the pages are rendered to high-resolution images rather than converted to vector paths, which is more reliable and produces identical results at print resolution.

Will the text still be selectable?

Only if you enable 'Keep text searchable'. That option draws an invisible text layer over the images so search and copy still work. With it off, the text is pure image and cannot be selected or extracted.

Which DPI should I choose?

300 DPI is the standard for commercial printing and the right default. Use 150 for screen-only documents where file size matters, and 600 for very small type, fine linework, or archival masters.

Can I edit the text afterwards?

No — flattening is irreversible. The output pages are images, so text can no longer be edited or reflowed. Always keep the original PDF as your editable copy.

Why would I turn the searchable layer off?

If a viewer or a print shop lacks the embedded font — or substitutes it badly — text reflows, glyphs turn to boxes, and a carefully set document comes out wrong. Honest Trade-Offs

Flattening is a one-way operation. Once a page is an image, its text can no longer be edited, reflowed or restyled — keep the original file as your editable master. File size also grows with DPI and page count, since every page becomes a full-resolution image.

Choose the searchable option when the file still needs to be found by text — an archive copy, a contract, a report. Skip it when the point is that the text can't be lifted: a proof, a paid document, or a file where extraction would be a problem.
