When Linearization Helps

Use it when the PDF will live behind a URL: product manuals, reports, whitepapers, invoices, statements, onboarding packets or downloadable forms. On a server that supports byte-range requests, a linearized PDF lets readers start on page one instead of waiting for the whole document.

It is less useful for files that only live locally or inside a zip. The win is progressive delivery over the web — the same reason streaming video starts before the whole file is cached.
