A PDF That Carries Its Own Files

A PDF can hold more than pages. The format has a built-in attachments mechanism — an embedded-files name tree — that lets a document carry spreadsheets, source data, images, or any other file inside itself. Recipients open the attachment panel in any PDF reader and pull the files out, no extra tooling needed.

When Attachments Beat a Zip

Attach files when the document and its supporting material should travel as one unit: a report with its source data, a contract with its annexes, a project package with assets. Unlike a zip, the bundle opens in any PDF reader and the attachments are one click away from the pages that reference them.

Two honest limits: encrypted PDFs can be read and their attachments listed, but saving rebuilds the file from page images — the text layer is lost, so unlock the file first if text matters. And while any reader can extract attachments, not every mobile viewer surfaces the attachment panel prominently.
