PDF layers are Optional Content Groups (OCGs). They let a document contain separately switchable sets of content — for example measurements, annotations, translations or print marks — that compatible viewers can show or hide.

Does hiding a layer remove its content?

No. Hiding only changes the layer's default visibility in the document configuration. The content stays in the file and can usually be re-enabled by the reader, so it is not a redaction.

What happens when I delete a layer?

The group is removed from the layer configuration rather than erasing page graphics. Content that referenced the group may behave differently depending on the viewer, so deletions can be undone until you apply and download.

Can I add a new layer to a PDF?

Yes. You can create a new empty Optional Content Group with a custom name. Content can then be assigned to it later in an editor that supports OCG membership.

Will every PDF viewer respect these settings?

Most desktop viewers that implement Optional Content Groups will honor the default visibility and names. Some lightweight or mobile viewers ignore layers entirely and show everything.

Can I edit layers in an encrypted PDF?

Encrypted PDFs can be opened in view-only mode so you can inspect the layer list. To apply changes, unlock the file first with the Unprotect PDF tool.

Does the tool rewrite the page content?

No. Visibility, rename, add and delete operations update the /OCProperties layer configuration. The page content streams are left untouched.

Some PDFs are built like design files: annotations, translations, measurements, print marks or alternate versions can sit on separate Optional Content Groups — usually called layers. Visibility Is a Default, Not a Redaction

Hiding a layer only changes whether it is visible by default. The underlying content remains inside the file, and a reader can usually turn the layer back on. That makes this tool useful for presentation defaults — like shipping a drawing with measurements off — but not for removing sensitive information.

Deleting a layer removes the group from the layer configuration rather than erasing page graphics. If your goal is permanent removal of content, use a redaction or content-editing workflow instead of layer controls.
