Control the Layers Inside a PDF

Some PDFs are built like design files: annotations, translations, measurements, print marks or alternate versions can sit on separate Optional Content Groups — usually called layers. Viewers that support OCGs let you switch those layers on and off, but most PDF tools give you no way to change the defaults or clean up the list.

This tool reads the layer configuration from your PDF and lets you edit it directly. Flip a layer's default visibility, rename cryptic group names, add a new empty layer for later authoring, or remove entries you do not want to ship. The page content streams are not rewritten — the changes live in the document's /OCProperties configuration.

Everything operates on the layer list, not on the page graphics themselves.

Visibility Is a Default, Not a Redaction

Hiding a layer only changes whether it is visible by default. The underlying content remains inside the file, and a reader can usually turn the layer back on. That makes this tool useful for presentation defaults — like shipping a drawing with measurements off — but not for removing sensitive information.

Deleting a layer removes the group from the layer configuration rather than erasing page graphics. If your goal is permanent removal of content, use a redaction or content-editing workflow instead of layer controls.
