How DjVu to PDF Conversion Works

DjVu was built for scanned documents: it compresses text and imagery far better than JPEG, which is why so many scanned books and archive collections live in .djvu files. The catch is that almost nothing else can open them. This tool decodes the document with a WebAssembly DjVu engine, renders every page to a bitmap at the resolution you choose, and embeds each render as a JPEG page in a PDF.

The whole pipeline runs in your browser. A 500-page scanned book never touches a server — decoding, rasterizing, and PDF assembly all happen on your device.

DjVu compresses brilliantly but opens almost nowhere. PDF opens everywhere.

Resolution and Quality

The DPI setting controls how many pixels each page is rendered at: 72 DPI produces the smallest file for on-screen reading, 150 DPI is the balanced default, and 300 DPI preserves fine detail for printing. Each PDF page keeps the document's physical dimensions, so a page scanned at letter size stays letter size.

JPEG quality trades file size against image fidelity on the rendered pages. The default 85% is a good middle ground for scanned text; raise it for documents with photographs or fine line art.

The Output Is Image-Only

The PDF contains rendered page images — it is not searchable and text cannot be selected, even if the original DjVu carried a hidden text layer. To get searchable text, run the result through the OCR PDF tool afterwards.

Only bundled single-file DjVu documents are supported. Indirect DjVu files — where an index file references separate page files — cannot be resolved because the companion files are not available to the browser.
