How to Extract Pages from a PDF and Keep Only What You Need

You have a 200-page PDF. You need page 14. Forwarding the whole file to get one page out feels absurd — and if the other 199 pages contain anything sensitive, it's also a disclosure problem.

Extraction is a retrieval task, not reorganization: pick a subset of pages, write a new PDF of just those, leave the original untouched.

The Fast Way

  1. Open the Extract Pages tool
  2. Drop your file in
  3. Type a range like 1-5, 8, 12-15 or click the page thumbnails
  4. Download the new file with only the chosen pages

The original never changes. A wrong pick costs nothing; run it again.

Why the Free Workarounds Have a Caveat

Browser Print → Save as PDF with a custom page range is the usual free fallback. It works — but print is a virtual printer, not a page copier: interactive form fields get flattened, hyperlinks die, and the print driver re-encodes content. Huge documents can also choke the print dialog.

A page-copying extractor keeps interactivity intact. For a tax worksheet or any fillable form, that difference decides whether the extracted pages remain usable.

macOS Preview can also extract by dragging page thumbnails, preserving page objects — Mac-only and easy to miss, but a clean method.

Extract vs. Split vs. Delete: Pick the Right Operation

Operation Intent Output
Extract pages Keep a subset One new PDF with only the chosen pages
Split PDF Divide everything Multiple PDFs covering every page
Delete pages Remove unwanted pages The original minus the removed pages
Organize pages Reorder Same pages, new order

Extract and Delete can produce the same output — but when you want 2 pages out of 500, "select those two" is a sane path and "select 498 to remove" is not. Use Split PDF or Delete Pages when that's actually the job.

The Privacy Angle

Extraction is disproportionately a sensitive-document operation — the point of "share only these pages" is often that the other pages are confidential. Extracting one invoice from a bank statement means uploading the entire statement to a server if you use an upload-based splitter. Data minimization says the document should never leave the device.

Client-side processing removes the question: no upload, no server copy, nothing to breach. Open your browser's Network panel and watch — no file bytes leave.

Practical Tips

Printed page numbers ≠ PDF page numbers. Front matter offsets everything. Trust the viewer's page counter, not the number printed on the sheet. This accounts for almost every off-by-N mistake.

Mixed range syntax saves passes. 1-5, 8, 12-15 in one go beats three separate extractions.

Check the extract before deleting the source. Flip through the output, especially when ranges were typed blind.

On phones, extraction is one of the most common on-the-go tasks — a mobile browser handles it with no app install.

Extract the pages you need here. The file stays in your browser.

I built OxygenPDF because I got tired of uploading contracts and tax forms to random websites. Your PDFs never leave your browser.
