Make Citations Clickable in a PDF Thesis or Paper

Your examiner reads the thesis on a laptop. Every time they hit "[37]" they scroll to the back, find entry 37, then scroll back and hunt for the sentence they were reading. Clickable citations fix that, and you can make citations clickable in a PDF after it's finished, without going back to Word or LaTeX.

Quick answer: To make citations clickable in a PDF, open Citation Linker and drop in the paper. It finds the References section, matches each in-text citation such as [12] or (Smith et al., 2020) to its entry, and adds invisible links that jump to the entry or open its DOI. Check the citation map, then click Link Citations.

Why Most Exported PDFs Have Dead Citations

A citation is clickable only if something wrote a link annotation over it. LaTeX does this when the document loads the hyperref package, which turns every \cite into a link to its bibliography entry. Without hyperref, the PDF has the same numbers and no links.

Word is less predictable. Whether a citation inserted by a reference manager becomes a link depends on the plugin, the citation style and how the document was exported. Often the answer is no.

So the fix that's cleanest in theory is to go back to the source, add hyperref or change the export, and rebuild. That's the right move when you have the source and your build still compiles. It's no help when the source is on a dead laptop, the PDF came from a journal, or the template is a co-author's mess you don't want to touch two days before submission.

What Citation Linker Recognises

Citation Linker works on the PDF's text layer, the same text you can select. It has two jobs: find the reference list, and find the markers that point into it.

The reference list is located by its heading: References, Bibliography, Works Cited, Literature Cited or Reference List, on a line of its own. Without one, the tool looks for a cluster of numbered or year-heavy lines in the last 40% of the document. Each entry becomes a target, and DOIs inside an entry are picked up.

How Citation Linker connects a paper: in-text markers like [2], [1-3] and (Smith et al., 2020) are matched by key to entries in the References section, and each match gets an invisible link that jumps to the entry or opens its DOI.

In the body, it recognises these forms:

Style Example What gets linked
Numeric [12] The number
Numeric list [2, 3] Each number, separately
Numeric range [1-3] The two endpoints (the middle number is still counted as cited)
Author-year (Smith, 2020), (Smith et al., 2020), (Smith & Jones, 2020) The whole parenthesis
With a page locator (Garcia, 2018, p. 4) The whole parenthesis
Several works in one parenthesis (Smith et al., 2020; Garcia, 2018) Each citation separately, to its own entry
Narrative Garcia (2018), Smith et al. (2020), Lee and Park (2019) Name and year

The semicolon group is the form APA's own guidance on citing multiple works uses, and each work in it gets its own link. A single-author narrative citation like "Garcia (2018)" is only linked when a Garcia 2018 entry exists in the references, so a capitalised word before a year in brackets, like "March (2018)", isn't mistaken for a citation. Plain years in the prose are left alone.

I tested it on two short papers, one numeric and one author-year. The numeric one matched all five markers to three references with nothing left over. The author-year one mixed a single-author narrative citation, a page locator and a three-work semicolon group, and all five citations matched, with "0 unmatched".

The Citations It Misses

Superscript numbers (Vancouver-style ¹ ²) aren't recognised: they have no brackets to match, and telling a superscript citation from a footnote mark or an exponent needs more than the text alone.

If a source is cited in a form the matcher skips, the review map shows that entry as "Not cited in the text". Read that label as "no citation recognised", not as proof the source is unused.

The review map is where you catch this. It lists every reference with how often and where it's cited, counts unmatched markers, and lets you switch an entry between jumping to the reference list and opening its DOI, or turn its links off.

How to Make Citations Clickable Step by Step

  1. Open Citation Linker and drop in the PDF. Scanned papers need OCR first; without a text layer there's nothing to match.
  2. Read the summary line, for example "3 references · 5 markers · 0 unmatched". If it found no references, check that the section has a plain heading.
  3. Go through the citation map. Entries with a DOI default to opening the DOI; switch any to "Reference entry" if you'd rather keep readers in the document.
  4. Click Link Citations, check the success count, and download.

The links are invisible: no blue boxes, no change to fonts or layout. A jump lands on the reference entry's own line, not just the top of the right page.

Before You Submit

The tool only adds links. It can't fix a wrong reference number or a missing entry, so proofread as usual. A password-protected PDF works too: enter the password and the linked copy keeps its real, selectable text. The download is saved without the password, so protect it again if you need to.

Links rot, too. A DOI is the most durable kind of link, but if your bibliography also carries plain URLs, run the finished file through Dead Link Debugger or read our guide to checking broken links in a PDF. For a thesis, a clickable table of contents helps the examiner as much as the citations do.

Your thesis stays on your computer. Text extraction, matching and link writing all run in the browser tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make references clickable in a PDF?

Add link annotations over each in-text citation that point at the reference entry. Citation Linker finds and matches them automatically, so you only review the result.

Yes. When an entry contains a DOI, the tool defaults to linking it to https://doi.org/…. You can switch each entry between the DOI and the reference list, or edit the DOI or URL by hand.

Why are my citations not clickable after exporting from Word?

Word only writes links that exist in the document, and many reference-manager citations aren't hyperlinks. You can change the citation setup and export again, or add the links to the finished PDF.

How do I make citations clickable in LaTeX?

Load the hyperref package in the preamble and recompile. Every \cite and \ref becomes a link. If you can't recompile, add the links to the PDF afterwards.

No. The links have no border or colour, and the page content isn't redrawn, even when the file is password-protected.

Got a paper full of dead "[12]"s? Make its citations clickable in your browser, then check the map before you send it.
