About Add Page Numbers

How Page Numbering Works

Drop a PDF in, pick where you want the numbers, and the tool stamps a page number on every page. You choose the position (nine options from top-left to bottom-right), the font size, the number format, and where to start counting.

OxygenPDF adds the numbers directly to the PDF pages using embedded fonts. The output is a standard PDF that looks the same everywhere — print, screen, any viewer. Everything runs in your browser.

When You Need Page Numbers

Plenty of PDFs ship without page numbers. They’re fine until someone needs to reference a specific page.

Legal & Court Filings

Courts require numbered pages. Submissions without them get rejected or sent back.

Academic Papers

Dissertations, theses, and journal submissions need page numbers. Some require Roman numerals for front matter.

Business Reports

Board decks, quarterly reports, and proposals need numbered pages so reviewers can reference sections in meetings.

Manuals & Documentation

Technical manuals and training documents without page numbers make it impossible to direct someone to the right section.

Numbering Formats and Options

Six formats: decimal (1, 2, 3), zero-padded (01, 02, 03), uppercase Roman (I, II, III), lowercase Roman (i, ii, iii), uppercase alphabetic (A, B, C), and lowercase alphabetic (a, b, c). Start from any number, not just 1.

The “skip first page” option leaves your title page or cover unnumbered. Margin control sets how far the numbers sit from the page edges. Nine position options cover every corner, edge center, and the center of the page.

How It Compares

Adding page numbers is straightforward. The differences are in format options and whether your file gets uploaded.

Your Document Stays on Your Device

Page numbering happens entirely in your browser. Your PDF doesn’t get uploaded anywhere. The numbered output downloads directly to your machine. Close the tab and it’s gone.
