About Add Header & Footer
How Headers and Footers Work
The tool adds text to six zones on every page: header left, header center, header right, footer left, footer center, and footer right. Type whatever you want in each zone. Template variables — {page}, {pages}, and {date} — get replaced with the current page number, total page count, and today’s date.
OxygenPDF embeds the text directly into the PDF pages using standard fonts. The result looks identical in every viewer. Everything runs in your browser.
When You Need Headers and Footers
Headers and footers add context to every page. They’re expected in professional, legal, and academic documents.
Legal Documents
Case numbers, document titles, and filing dates in the header. Page numbers in the footer. Courts expect both.
Corporate Reports
Company name, report title, and date across the top. “Page X of Y” at the bottom. Standard formatting for board packets and investor materials.
Academic Submissions
Running headers with the paper title and author name. Journals and universities have specific formatting requirements.
Internal Documentation
Version numbers, department names, or “DRAFT” labels that should appear on every page of an internal document.
Template Variables
Three variables are available: {page} inserts the current page number, {pages} inserts the total page count, and {date} inserts today’s date. Combine them however you want — “Page {page} of {pages}” in the footer center is the most common pattern.
Font size and margin distance are adjustable. The margin controls how far headers sit from the top edge and how far footers sit from the bottom.
How It Compares
Header/footer tools vary in how many zones they offer and what template variables they support.
