The Margin Rule Sits Where a Real Sheet Puts It
Ruled paper isn’t just horizontal lines. Look at a real notebook page or a legal pad and there’s a second, usually red, vertical rule running down the left side, set in from the edge to leave room for a date or a margin note. Get that rule’s position wrong and the page reads as slightly off, even if nobody can say exactly why.
This generator puts it at 1.25 inches (90 pt) from the left edge, the distance TOPS and Business Source print theirs at on a legal pad. Every page in the file gets the same rule, in whatever color you set.
Three US Rulings, and the Measurements Behind the Names
“College ruled” and “wide ruled” get thrown around loosely. Here’s what each one actually measures, and who it’s for.
Narrow Ruled, 1/4 in (6.35 mm)
The tightest US spacing, sized for smaller handwriting and anywhere you want more lines on a page than a college pad gives you.
College Ruled, 9/32 in (7.14 mm)
What most people picture when they hear “notebook paper.” Pacon’s own product line calls this size exactly that: 9/32 Ruled (College).
Wide Ruled, 11/32 in (8.73 mm)
Also sold as legal ruled, matching the spacing on a standard legal pad. Roomier for bigger handwriting, or for anyone who finds college ruled cramped.

Fixed at the real notebook-paper distance from the left edge, not scaled to whatever spacing you picked for the horizontal lines.
How It Compares

College Ruled vs. Wide Ruled: 1.59 mm of Difference
College ruled is 9/32 inch (7.14 mm) between lines. Wide ruled, also sold as legal ruled, is 11/32 inch (8.73 mm), a sixteenth of an inch more, 1.59 mm on paper. That sounds trivial until it compounds over a full page: college ruled fits roughly 22% more lines in the same vertical space, which is the whole reason two separate presets exist instead of one “ruled” default.
Wide ruled is the size most elementary classrooms hand out first, before students move to college ruled once their handwriting gets smaller and denser. Legal pads kept the same 11/32 inch spacing into adulthood, which is why “wide” and “legal ruled” are two names for the same measurement.
Not an Official Standard, Just Everyone’s Standard
Search for an ANSI or ISO specification for ruled paper and you’ll come up empty. There isn’t one. What backs these three numbers instead is every manufacturer landing on the same figures independently: Pacon’s product catalog names a line “9/32 Ruled (College)”, TOPS and Business Source both print “11/32 in line spaces” and a “1-1/4 in left margin” on their legal pad specs, and Wikipedia’s own ruled-paper entry states the same three fractions.
“College ruled” is a convention, not a regulation, in other words, just one confirmed by enough independent sources that treating it as fixed beats picking your own number.
